The magic of a voiceThe other day I was watching Animal Planet and a new documentary begun, about Europe’s animals. Nothing exciting, but I watched it anyway. Why? Because of the narrator’s voice! And what a voice it was. I loved it instantly. The credentials said that the narrator was Mr. Sean Pertwee. I’ve never heard of him, until now. And I realized that his voice is familiar, I’ve heard it before in other Discovery Channel documentaries. So I watched the whole piece, just to listen to that voice. In the end I learned something new about Europe, but I couldn’t get that voice out of my mind. It is a soothing, captivating, calming and engaging voice; very professional. (more…)

I thought I have something better to do but I was wrong: I didn’t so I went to the movies to see New in Town. Now, I wish I’ve tried harder to find something else to do, like reading a book or a magazine. (more…)

Yes Man - the movieYesterday I saw the movie Yes Man.  I really enjoyed it. Even if it was in the middle of the week, it felt like the weekend for a few hours. The mall was very crowded and so was the cinema, but this is the magic of Orange Film – happy hour at the movies on a Wednesday night. I’ll start with the conclusion: Yes Man is worth your time and attention. It is a comedy that goes beyond smiling - it made me laugh, especially the chicken factory part.  And it is definitely better & funnier than Meet Dave. (more…)

The New Sex and the CityI’ve heard a rumor that said that there will be a new Sex and the City made this year and released in 2010. Not Clothes and the City, but sex. Because in 2009 is all about relationships and less about shopping. We don’t have much money left to spend on fashion anyway. To support this idea, the creators of SATC decided to take a new approach: (more…)

The Mihai Eminescu Monument in OnestiIf you don’t know who Mihai Eminescu is, Wikipedia will tell you (almost) all about him. Too keep it short, I can tell you this: he is Romania’s greatest and my favorite poet. On January 15th (the day he was born) every year, we celebrate his work and contribution to our linguistic legacy. From all the literature I studied during school and high-school, only one poem stuck to my mind. It is a short and sweet Eminescu poem about love. Maybe that’s why I still remember it. :D The poem is called “And if …” and I’ve found a pretty good translation for it (courtesy of romanianvoice.com). If you have a girlfriend or boyfriend which can read in Romanian, dedicate her/him this poem, in its original form, on Dragobete (our very own Valentine's Day) and she\he’ll look at you in a whole new perspective. O:-) (more…)

Nicole Kidman in AustraliaYesterday, thanks to Orange Film and my friends, I saw the movie Australia. My friends picked the movie and bought the tickets, so I just said: “OK, I’ll be there.” A haven’t read any reviews about the movie but I’ve heard on the radio that it is a big ad for touristic Australia and too long for a love story. Even so, I enjoyed it. The movie is long indeed - 165 Minutes – but I didn’t get bored. If you read some reviews and are still searching for some reasons to see this movie, here are 3 of them: you’ll see beauty (beautiful people and places), you’ll be reminded that war sucks big time and you’ll get in the mood for a vacation in the sun (here, in Romania, the winter is at its peek, brrrrrrr.) Everyone talked about Ms. Nicole Kidman’s and Mr. Hugh Jackman’s performances, but no one said anything about the character King George. (more…)

Late show with David LettermanAXN Romania is presenting every Monday to Friday evening the Late show with David Letterman. The show starts at 8 PM, just in time to watch it during dinner time. Originally, the show is on in America at 11:30 PM ET, so it’s really a late show. In Romania, nobody would watch it so late because we have to be fresh for work the next morning. After watching the yesterday show, I decided to share with you my thoughts on this. (more…)

The Romanian Cultural Institute in Warsaw, Poland organized in January a campaign named “Forgotten Words of Admiration”. It is about the words of famous Polish people about Romania and its people. The mission of this campaign is to remember that the negative stereotypes and facts that Romania is known for do not represent the Romanian people. We should not be seen only with negative feelings & facts in mind, but as a people going through a transition, trying to understand the new laws of economy and change the way we view our lives. I think every people has it’s share of bad events or decisions. If ours were more in the media it doesn’t mean that we all are thieves or try to profit from others. Our only mistake is that we tolerate for too long the wrong doings in our country. (more…)

Caring for your household plants and flowers The spring is coming closer and closer and we need to let it enter in our homes too. The spring cleaning – which is a must -- is a great opportunity to pay more attention to your plants and flowers. It is the time for your plants’ rebirth, and the time spent with them this spring will be paid back by the beauty and health of your plants in summer. For those who have no plants at home, it’s time to buy at least 2 or 3, from the easy to maintain types of plants. The plant market has a lot to offer and the effort is worth: the plants beautify the house, purify and keep the air humid and bring positive energy to those around them. To ease the job of caring for your plants, I've created this document (in excel format) to keep record of them. You can save it on your pc, print it or give it to a friend who has a passion for house plants. The information needed to write on the spreadsheet can be taken from websites, for accuracy; they refer to ordinary caring of house plants. In this way, you’ll get an overview of your plants that you’ll guide your caring for them. In the second part of the document, you’ll find a spreadsheet for plant and flowers you wish to buy. You can fill it in every time you have an idea and print it when you go shopping. Hoping that this information is useful for you, I want you feedback for improving these spreadsheets. Good luck on taking care of your plants and enjoy them as much as you can.

No Country for Old Menversiunea in limba romanaYesterday evening I saw the last Oscar movie: “No Country for Old Men”. Motto: “There are no clean getaways”. It was mind blowing and all that violence and blood made me seek. I didn’t understand a thing before the end and most part of the people form the theater thought it was horrible. NCFOL is definitely not an easy movie. I started understanding it as I re-played it again and again in my head and talked about it with my husband and friends. As all things in life, this movie has its haters and lovers. The haters are hating is for shallow reasons (bad haircut, too much violence, the good guy died off screen, only 2 soundtracks etc) and the lovers are loving it for the meaning those shallow reasons are giving to the hole story and point of the movie. (more…)

I am very proud to be a fellow citizen of such bright teenagers. I am sure it was a real challenge for them, having in mind the lack of resources and motivation in our present education system.
