The magic of a voiceThe other day I was watching Animal Planet and a new documentary begun, about Europe’s animals. Nothing exciting, but I watched it anyway. Why? Because of the narrator’s voice! And what a voice it was. I loved it instantly. The credentials said that the narrator was Mr. Sean Pertwee. I’ve never heard of him, until now. And I realized that his voice is familiar, I’ve heard it before in other Discovery Channel documentaries. So I watched the whole piece, just to listen to that voice. In the end I learned something new about Europe, but I couldn’t get that voice out of my mind. It is a soothing, captivating, calming and engaging voice; very professional. (more…)

The Mihai Eminescu Monument in OnestiIf you don’t know who Mihai Eminescu is, Wikipedia will tell you (almost) all about him. Too keep it short, I can tell you this: he is Romania’s greatest and my favorite poet. On January 15th (the day he was born) every year, we celebrate his work and contribution to our linguistic legacy. From all the literature I studied during school and high-school, only one poem stuck to my mind. It is a short and sweet Eminescu poem about love. Maybe that’s why I still remember it. :D The poem is called “And if …” and I’ve found a pretty good translation for it (courtesy of romanianvoice.com). If you have a girlfriend or boyfriend which can read in Romanian, dedicate her/him this poem, in its original form, on Dragobete (our very own Valentine's Day) and she\he’ll look at you in a whole new perspective. O:-) (more…)

IOAA-07-Romania wins golden medalDear Vilmos Loo & team, Congratulations for the medals and prizes won at the International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics. I am very proud to be a fellow citizen of such bright teenagers. I am sure it was a real challenge for them, having in mind the lack of resources and motivation in our present education system. Bravo for these students that they followed their ambition and didn´t listen to the pessimistic and good-for-nothing comments. The details of the competition: - The IOAA (International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics) 2007 took place in Chiang Mai, Thailand, in 30th Nov – 9th Dec 2007. - It is the first competition of this kind - 21 countries (the distribution map is very interesting!), 86 students, 41 Leaders and 7 Observers - Our team:
  • Students: Miruna Oprescu, Mihai Tomozeiu, Vilmos Loo, Valentin Buciumas, Nicu David Serban
  • Leaders: Sorin Trocaru and Radu-Calin Zapotinschi
  • Observers: Constantin Traistaru
